Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), announced that his party’s Central Executive Committee has decided to support specific provisions of the proposed 27th Amendment to the Constitution. Speaking at a Karachi press conference, Bilawal said the PPP will back Article 243, the establishment of Constitutional Courts, and reforming the judicial-transfer mechanism — provided safeguards for democratic principles and provincial representation are maintained.
He emphasized that the Constitutional Courts idea stems from the PPP’s own manifestos and the Charter of Democracy.
On the judge-transfers, the PPP proposes that both outgoing and incoming chief justices be part of the decision-making body, and that the concerned judge be able to present their position, to ensure transparency.
Regarding other elements of the amendment—such as dual nationality and executive magistracy—Bilawal said the PPP is still deliberating and has not yet committed its support.
He reaffirmed the party’s insistence on preserving provincial autonomy and fair provincial share in the National Finance Commission, hinting that the PPP may oppose provisions that undermine those principles.
