Aftab Shaban Mirani

Veteran political leader and former Chief Minister of Sindh, Aftab Shaban Mirani, passed away in Karachi on Saturday following a protracted illness.

Mirani, a longtime stalwart of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), had served as the Chief Minister of Sindh in 1990 and later as Pakistan’s Defence Minister from 1993-96. His political career spanned numerous terms in the National Assembly, representing Constituency NA-202 (Shikarpur/I) until August 2023.

In his condolence message, President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Mirani as a senior parliamentarian and loyal PPP leader who made significant contributions to Pakistan’s democratic process. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also conveyed deep sorrow, describing Mirani as a man of integrity, humility and dedication to public service.

Mirani’s funeral prayers were scheduled at Masjid Bait-ul-Islam, Defence Phase-IV, Karachi, with burial at Gizri Graveyard, according to his family.
