UoK open merit admissions Sindh

The University of Karachi (UoK) has been instructed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Sindh to dismantle its longstanding “Karachi-Sindh-Pakistan” quota system and implement an open-merit admission policy for all students holding a Sindh domicile.

This directive emerged during the committee’s review of UoK’s audit reports covering 2021-23, chaired by Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, with participation of the Sindh Higher Education Secretary Moeen Siddiqui and UoK’s acting Vice-Chancellor Haris Shoaib.

Khuhro emphasised that segregating Karachi from the rest of Sindh in admissions was unjustified and urged the university to adopt a merit-based system similar to that of NED University of Engineering & Technology.

In addition, the committee raised concerns about UoK’s failure to make operational the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair despite an investment of Rs 422 million, and ordered its immediate activation.
