The Sindh Assembly witnessed a tense and emotional session on December 1, 2025, following the death of a three-year-old child, Ibrahim, who fell into an uncovered manhole near Nipa in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi.
Opposition legislators strongly condemned what they described as “municipal negligence,” demanding swift preventive measures and accountability for officials responsible. Among the most vocal was MQM lawmaker Iftikhar Alam, who questioned how frequently children must fall into open drains before authorities act, and criticised the delay — it took 11 hours to recover the child’s body.
A representative of Jamaat-e-Islami, Muhammad Farooq, called for accountability of local municipal authorities, including the Karachi mayor and town administration, noting that rescue officials were reportedly absent when the incident occurred.
In response, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, labelled the death “extremely tragic,” and assured that those responsible would be held accountable. He stated that about 88,000 manholes had been covered across Karachi this year, but committed to further action to prevent recurrence.
The session saw a walk-out by MQM lawmakers after the Speaker briefly halted the Leader of the Opposition from speaking. Multiple calls for urgent municipal reforms, better drainage-maintenance oversight, and improved infrastructure safety were submitted.
