Karachi sewage project EIB funding

The Government of Pakistan and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have formalised a financing agreement worth €60 million to advance a major sewage and wastewater infrastructure initiative in Karachi. The declaration was signed during the 15th Pakistan–European Union Joint Commission meeting in Brussels by Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim and Edvardas Bumsteinas, Head of the EIB’s Asia Pacific Division. Senior representatives from the European Commission, the EU delegation, and Pakistan’s mission to the EU attended the ceremony.

The funding will support the Karachi Water Infrastructure Framework project, aimed at rehabilitating and constructing critical water treatment facilities in the city. With this financing package, authorities expect significant improvements in safe water supply and overall water security for Karachi’s rapidly growing population.

Secretary Karim highlighted Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation with European partners to address key development and infrastructure priorities. The declaration underscores Pakistan’s commitment to modernising essential urban services and building climate-resilient infrastructure in one of the country’s largest metropolitan areas.

In related developments, the Sindh government has pledged to accelerate the urgent lining of the Kalri Baghar Feeder, a primary conduit for Karachi’s water supply, to protect the city’s allocated water resources.
