Faisalabad acid attacks lifelong scars

Acid attacks continued to leave lasting scars in Faisalabad throughout 2025, highlighting the persistent threat of gender-based violence and the deep personal and social impact of such crimes, police and activists said. Official records show that four acid-throwing incidents were reported in the district this year, resulting in at least five victims, most of whom suffered serious burns and long-term trauma.

The most recent attack occurred in December in the Samundri area, where a woman, Jameela Bibi, and her nephew, Muhammad Ahsan, were injured after assailants on a motorcycle threw acid at them while they were travelling to a family wedding. Officers later arrested the prime suspect, identified as Ali, along with his mother, while searching for additional accomplices.

Police said other attacks this year included incidents in Ghulam Muhammad Abad, Nishat Abad and City Samundri, where victims were targeted following domestic disputes or personal conflicts. In several cases, authorities promptly registered criminal cases under the Pakistan Penal Code, including provisions specific to acid-related violence, and submitted challans to the courts as part of ongoing prosecutions.

Activists and rights advocates reiterated that acid attacks often stem from family disputes, rejected relationships or domestic tensions, making women particularly vulnerable. They called for stronger enforcement of laws, better protection for survivors, and enhanced preventive measures, including stricter regulation of acid sales and wider public awareness campaigns.
