Netflix Lyari series claim

Veteran Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nabeel Gabol has claimed that Netflix is planning a scripted television series based on Lyari, one of Karachi’s oldest and most culturally rich neighbourhoods. Gabol’s comments, made amid ongoing debate over the portrayal of Lyari in the Indian film Dhurandhar, have sparked discussion across social media platforms.

According to Gabol, a Netflix production team has already approached him about developing a three-season series that would present what he described as the “real Lyari” — reflecting its history, social dynamics and political narrative rather than the negative depictions found in popular films. He stated that the project aims to highlight Lyari’s complex socio-political context and counter perceived misrepresentations in foreign productions.

Gabol also claimed that the Netflix team is expected to visit Pakistan in March to advance preparations for the proposed series. In his remarks, he suggested that the project could feature international talent, alleging that producers had cited a physical resemblance between himself and Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, known for his role in Netflix’s Narcos, as a basis for potential casting inspiration.

The PPP leader has been vocal in his criticism of Dhurandhar and its portrayal of Lyari figures, arguing that the film mischaracterises the area as a hub of crime rather than acknowledging its cultural heritage and sporting legacy. Gabol’s Netflix series claims, however, have not been confirmed by Netflix, and no official statements or production details have been released by the streaming platform.
