PPP emerged as the leading force in the Sindh local body by-elections, securing 21 out of 28 seats across 14 districts, including Karachi, according to unofficial results released by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Independent candidates won three seats, while Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) secured two. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) each managed to claim one seat.
Polling, which began at 8 am and concluded at 4 pm, saw a relatively low turnout. Despite minor disruptions in Karachi, the PPP maintained strong dominance throughout Sindh, showcasing its political strength across both urban and rural constituencies.
In Karachi, PPP clinched several key victories. Shahroze Ahmed won the vice chairman seat in UC-8 Sohrab Goth with 1,790 votes, while in Baldia Town UC-8, PPP’s Mohammad Faisal secured the vice chairman slot with 3,132 votes. Shehnila Amir also delivered a decisive win for PPP in Orangi UC-1, polling 3,801 votes. The party continued its winning streak in Manghopir, Bhitt Shah, and multiple union councils.
Outside Karachi, PPP extended its dominance in Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Badin, Khairpur, Thatta, and Umerkot. In Umerkot alone, PPP candidates captured both district council and UC chairman seats with wide margins. The party also posted convincing victories in Rohri, Makki Shah, and Matli, further solidifying its position.
Independent candidates managed to make inroads in Mirpurkhas and Thatta, while GDA delivered an upset in Umerkot’s UC-41 by defeating the PPP candidate. However, the overall results underscore PPP’s clear lead across Sindh.
According to the ECP, of the 67 scheduled by-elections, 33 candidates were elected unopposed, while some constituencies saw rejected or withdrawn nominations. Despite isolated scuffles in Manghopir and Baldia, officials confirmed the polls were conducted in a largely peaceful manner.
With a commanding performance in these by-elections, PPP has reinforced its dominance in Sindh’s local government landscape, further strengthening its political base ahead of future contests.
