Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has outlined the key factors behind the recent gas shortage and outages affecting residents in Karachi. According to SSGC spokesperson Salman Ahmed Siddique, the city experienced lower gas availability this season due to a natural annual decline in reservoir output, with current supplies at 655 million cubic feet per day compared with 695 MMCFD last year.
Technical malfunctions at two gas fields further reduced supply by approximately 35 MMCFD over several days, prompting extended load management measures across the metropolitan area. Cold winter weather also led to increased household gas use, placing additional pressure on the system. Siddique noted that gas pressure has started stabilising, resulting in fewer consumer complaints, and affirmed that load management—conducted mainly at night to preserve underground pressure—is a normal operational practice to ensure fair distribution. SSGC continues to monitor supply conditions and urges consumers to report any irregularities to its helpline as efforts continue to prevent further outages.
