Environmental surveillance has detected Poliovirus in 10 out of 12 sewage samples collected across Karachi — raising serious concerns over renewed circulation of the virus in the city.
According to the testing results, the presence of wild poliovirus type-1 (WPV1) in sewage indicates that the virus is still circulating even if no recent paralytic cases have been reported in those areas. Authorities have described the findings as a red flag, emphasizing that the risk persists, especially for unvaccinated children under five.
Health officials and the national polio eradication programme have been urged to intensify immunization and surveillance efforts. Families are being reminded to ensure all children complete the full course of polio vaccinations.
