Pakistan’s government has announced a massive increase in fuel prices, raising petrol by over Rs137 per litre and high-speed diesel by around Rs184 per litre, in line with surging global oil prices. The new rates have pushed petrol to Rs458.41 per litre and diesel to Rs520.35 per litre, marking one of the largest hikes in recent history.
The decision was announced by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who said the increase was unavoidable due to the sharp rise in international crude oil prices amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Officials highlighted that global oil prices have surged significantly, with Brent crude crossing $109 per barrel, driven by geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions.
To offset the impact on lower-income groups, the government also introduced a targeted subsidy for motorcyclists, offering petrol at Rs100 per litre less (for up to 20 litres).
The hike comes after earlier attempts by the government to delay passing on the full burden of rising global prices, but authorities said the current situation made the increase unavoidable.
