Karachi, June 28, 2026: At least three Pakistan Rangers personnel were killed and four others injured after armed militants attacked a paramilitary facility in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area on the night of June 27.
According to Pakistan’s military, the attackers detonated explosives near the entrance of the Rangers compound before opening fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire with security forces.
The attack was claimed by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Explosion and Gunfire Reported Near Rangers Office
The incident occurred at a Sindh Rangers facility in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, close to several educational institutions and the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Witnesses reported hearing a powerful explosion followed by sustained gunfire, creating panic among residents.
According to initial police reports, the attackers used a vehicle to strike the outer barricade of the compound before attempting to enter the premises.
Security personnel responded to the assault, while additional law enforcement teams were dispatched to the location.
Three Rangers Personnel Killed, Four Injured
Pakistan’s military confirmed that three Rangers personnel lost their lives and four others were wounded during the attack.
Early reports from police and rescue officials contained differing casualty figures, but the military’s subsequent statement confirmed three deaths among Rangers personnel.
The injured were provided medical assistance following the incident.
Security Forces Launch Operation Against Attackers
Following the explosion, police, Rangers and specialised security units launched an operation to secure the compound.
Special Security Unit commandos and counterterrorism personnel were deployed as authorities restricted movement around the affected area.
Subsequent reports indicated that several attackers were killed and one suspect was captured alive. Accounts differed on the total number of militants involved.
Security officials began examining the scene and collecting evidence to establish how the attack was planned and carried out.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar Claims Responsibility
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a militant faction associated with the banned TTP, claimed responsibility for the assault.
The group has previously been linked to attacks against security personnel, government institutions and civilians, primarily in northwestern Pakistan.
The attack raised concerns about militant activity in Karachi, where major assaults on security installations have been less frequent than in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Sindh Chief Minister Orders Investigation
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and directed senior police officials to submit a detailed report.
The chief minister instructed the provincial police chief and Karachi’s additional inspector general to ensure an immediate response.
Authorities were also directed to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion and identify those responsible.
Police and security personnel continued their investigation after the compound was secured.
