Karachi manhole safety initiative

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Monem Zafar inaugurated the distribution of 1,000 manhole covers in New Karachi Town on Wednesday under a campaign he termed the “Save Our Children” initiative, aimed at reducing accidents caused by open sewer holes across the city.

Addressing media alongside New Karachi Town Chairman Muhammad Yousuf and local officials, Zafar criticised the city administration for failing to implement basic safety measures and emphasised the need to protect residents, particularly children, from fatal incidents.

He highlighted several infrastructure projects completed by the town administration, including the construction of 600 streets, establishment of a water park, and the provision of clean water to 20,000 homes, calling the manhole cover initiative a commendable step toward accident prevention.

Zafar urged other political parties to undertake similar safety measures in their jurisdictions and criticised city leadership for inadequate road conditions and unmet development promises. He also alleged a lack of clear vision from the Sindh government regarding Karachi’s development.

New Karachi Town Chairman Muhammad Yousuf noted that more than 27 people, including children, had lost their lives due to open sewer holes in the past year, underscoring the importance of the safety campaign. He stated that residents requiring a manhole cover could obtain one by submitting their CNIC and a photograph of the open manhole.
