Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) is planning to reclaim land from the sea to build an artificial island about 300 km off the coast of Sindh, which will serve as a launch pad for its offshore oil & gas exploration efforts.
PPL’s General Manager of Exploration and Core Business Development, Arshad Palekar, spoke at an industry conference in Islamabad that this will be the first such project for Pakistan, modelled in part after Abu Dhabi’s offshore island platforms.
Construction on the island is expected to be completed by February, after which PPL will begin round-the-clock exploration activities unimpeded by high tides or storms thanks to the platform being elevated about six feet above sea level.
This initiative follows PPL’s strategic partnership with Turkey’s national oil company’s subsidiary, Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company (TPOC), under a farm-out deal for the Eastern Offshore Indus C Block. The aim: boosting offshore exploration and strengthening Pakistan–Turkey energy cooperation.
