According to Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh’s Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control, Karachi’s law and order situation has improved significantly, with street crimes reportedly down by 50% since the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) took office.
Memon, speaking at an event hosted by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), likened Karachi’s present security situation to that of 15 years ago. He observed that passenger buses, which were previously compelled to travel in convoys owing to security concerns, may now run freely, demonstrating significant improvement.
Memon recognized an increase in Karachi street crimes during the previous caretaker government’s time, but emphasized that the present administration is working hard to restore order. He underlined the crucial need for law and order to preserve lives and promote economic progress.
Memon addressed Karachi’s previous security issues, claiming that the city had been purposely targeted to relocate businesses away from Pakistan, damaging the national economy. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting the business community, emphasizing its critical role in the country’s economic progress.
“It is the government’s job to provide a sense of security to traders. Memon added, “We are the people’s servants, and it is our duty to solve any legitimate problem.”
During the occasion, the FPCCI expressed significant concerns and proposals to the province government. Memon emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration across all sectors in successfully addressing Karachi’s difficulties.
Memon announced the development of the Dhabeji Economic Zone, a tax-free industrial zone as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in order to encourage investment. To encourage extra investment, the government intends to establish new economic zones.
Memon also discussed plans to enhance Karachi’s infrastructure, such as the K4 project, which aims to address the city’s water supply difficulties. In addition, the government has developed the People’s Bus Service, which includes eco-friendly electric cars and separate buses for women, with tickets subsidized to keep them cheap even as inflation rises.
The minister finished by emphasizing the Sindh government’s commitment to solve the critical concerns confronting Karachi residents and providing a business-friendly climate to promote growth and investment in the province.
