‘Abduction for ransom’ event reveals the ugly side of Karachi’s CTD

Karachi

Karachi: Another distressing event involving the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has emerged in Karachi, adding to the agency’s issues. According to reports, CTD personnel abducted a civilian and then released him after demanding a large ransom of Rs200,000.

On March 30, plainclothes cops reportedly took up the victim, named Atif Aslam, from the University Road neighbourhood of Gulshan-e Iqbal. Surprisingly, the authorities also seized Atif’s vehicle during the kidnapping.

According to sources, Atif was brutally tortured for four hours at an unidentified location. Initially, CTD officers requested Rs1.5 million for his release but finally settled on Rs 500,000.

In a terrifying turn of events, Atif was led to a bank in Mehmoodabad, where Rs200,000 was taken from an ATM. The horrified person was then freed with a terrifying warning that he needed to pay the remaining Rs 300,000 the next day.

Disturbingly, car tracking data indicated that Atif was brought to CTD Civil Lines, raising severe concerns about the department’s role in the suspected kidnapping.

Furthermore, a person named Sohail phoned Atif, asking that the remaining ransom be brought to CTD Civil Lines and threatening terrible repercussions if payment was not made soon.

Despite Atif’s efforts to seek justice by providing precise information to senior police officials and registering a complaint, the Karachi Police has failed to take meaningful action against the accused CTD personnel responsible for this heinous crime.

This event follows the Special Investigation Unit’s recent arrests of four CTD personnel during a raid in Karachi’s Garden area.

The detained cops were suspected of similar ransom abductions, prompting the Tipu Sultan police station to open a case against them.
