Karachi e-challan system

Within only six hours of its launch in Karachi, the new electronic challan system issued fines totalling approximately Rs 12 million, marking an aggressive rollout of digital traffic enforcement.

The system, introduced by the Sindh government under the supervision of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, is intended to replace manual ticketing with automated detection and billing of traffic violations. Cameras and other digital infrastructure will identify offences, prompt fine notices and enable payment online.

Karachi e-challan system: Officials say the goal is to enhance transparency in enforcement and reduce human error or discretion in improvised challans.

Under the new regime, penalties for violations such as jumping signals or speeding will be applied automatically, with repeat offenders facing stiffer repercussions.

Initially, around 200 cameras have been deployed across Karachi — with plans to expand to 2,000 city-wide. The system will be backed by traffic-control centres and an appeals mechanism to allow motorists to review or challenge tickets.

Inaugurating the system, Murad Ali Shah described it as a landmark reform in urban traffic discipline, predicting that the digital challan setup will blindside those accustomed to evading enforcement. The hefty early fine tally is seen as evidence of its near-immediate impact.
