Karachi Zoo brown bear Rano

On Friday, the Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered a committee appointed by the Sindh Chief Minister to visit the Karachi Zoo on November 2 and submit a report on the condition of the animals, including a female brown bear named Rano.

Rano, a Himalayan brown bear, had drawn public attention due to signs of neglect and poor living conditions at the zoo.

In an earlier order issued on October 17, the SHC had directed the committee—comprising petitioner Jude Allen Pereira, Dr. Nazeer Hussain Kalhoro, Advocate Jibran Nasir, and wildlife photographer Zafeer Ahmed Shaikh—to inspect the zoo. However, no visit had been scheduled, and the bear’s cage remained unset.

The court emphasised that the committee must assess the number of animals, their physical and mental condition, and the circumstances of their captivity. With the case fixed for hearing on November 6, the court specified that the visit must happen by November 2.

According to legal counsel Advocate Nasir, an application highlighted that no progress had been made in preparing Rano’s transfer cage or relocating her. Previous observations from the Islamabad examination team had confirmed insect presence in three wounds on Rano’s body and noted the animal’s stressed behaviour amid high noise levels at the zoo.
