Karachi extortion threat

A marble trader in Karachi’s Manghopir area has alleged that he was subjected to a daunting extortion attempt involving a demand of Rs 10 crore. He reported that unknown international numbers repeatedly called him, pressing him to send the money within five days.

When the deadline came and passed without payment, the threats escalated: the trader received a courier parcel containing two 9 mm bullets. The senders claimed ties to a gang-war group and warned of serious consequences if their demands were ignored.

Karachi Police have registered a case and are probing the source of the international calls and the courier delivery. Authorities have urged business owners and residents to stay alert and to report any suspicious calls or parcels immediately.

This incident comes amid a worsening wave of organized crime and extortion targeting traders across Karachi. Earlier in the same week, a car showroom on New M.A. Jinnah Road in Shikarpur Colony was attacked after its owner refused to pay an extortion demand of Rs 5 million; a shooter allegedly opened fire following threats from unknown numbers.

Law-enforcement officials say these developments have stirred anxiety in the city’s business community, with traders warning that mounting fear and intimidation could undermine commercial confidence in Karachi.
