KARACHI, September 23, 2026 — A major fire broke out at K-Electric’s Baloch Colony grid station in the early hours of Tuesday, disrupting electricity supplies to thousands of residents across several Karachi neighbourhoods. No casualties were reported.
Massive Fire Erupts at Baloch Colony Grid Station
The fire reportedly started at around 4am, with residents hearing a loud explosion before large flames and thick smoke emerged from the grid station near Sharea Faisal.
Rescue officials classified the incident as a third-degree fire. Flames reportedly rose between 30 and 40 feet as the blaze spread through three panels at the facility.
Firefighters Battle Blaze for Nearly an Hour
Eight fire tenders and two water bowsers were dispatched to the site. Firefighters worked for nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control, while cooling operations continued afterward.
Rescue officials confirmed that no deaths or injuries were reported in the incident.
Thousands Affected by Power Outage
Damage to equipment caused several feeders connected to the grid station to trip, resulting in power outages in areas including Mahmoodabad, PECHS, Tipu Sultan Road, Baloch Colony and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The electricity disruption also affected water pumps, businesses and daily activities, with some residents reporting prolonged outages during hot and humid weather.
K-Electric Restores Most Affected Feeders
K-Electric said electricity had been restored to 32 of the 38 affected feeders, bringing power back to around 70% of the affected areas within two hours.
Technical teams continued working on the remaining six feeders to restore electricity to the areas still experiencing outages.
Cause of Fire Still Under Investigation
Officials said the exact cause of the fire had not yet been established. A detailed technical assessment is expected after cooling operations are completed.
Initial reports indicated that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, but authorities have not yet confirmed the cause.
