In-house change in AJK postponed due to PPP’s pending nomination
The long-planned leadership change in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has hit a delay as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) high-command has still not nominated a replacement Leader of the House in the AJK Assembly.
Despite claiming a numerical majority, the PPP has been unable to advance its no-confidence motion for more than a week. Sources say the motion will likely be triggered only after PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari returns to the country.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) insists on holding early elections. The party warns that holding parliamentary polls in March would strip the new AJK government of its powers by January—two months before the vote.
The current AJK Assembly’s term ends in July. Traditionally, governments slow down development projects and key appointments about two months before elections. Nearly 80% of the region’s development budget remains unused, and around 2,000 recruitment posts stay vacant—giving political parties more control and leverage.
In short: the PPP’s internal indecision, the PML-N’s push for early polls, and a shrinking window for political manoeuvre in AJK have combined to stall the hand-over of power for now.
