Floods in Babusar Naran, GB

Floods in Babusar Naran, GB, Kill 3 Tourists, 15 Still Missing. After powerful monsoon rains unleashed chaos across the region on Monday. What was meant to be a scenic escape turned into a nightmare for dozens of tourists as gushing floodwaters ravaged roads, swept away vehicles, and left entire families stranded.

As skies darkened over Gilgit-Baltistan’s Babusar area in the Diamer district, torrential rain triggered flash floods that claimed the lives of at least three tourists. Four others were pulled from the debris, injured but alive. Tragically, fifteen people are still unaccounted for, sparking a massive search and rescue operation.

According to GB government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq, eight tourist vehicles were washed away in the flood’s fury. Floods in Babusar Naran, GB Kill 3 Tourists, 15 Still Missing—this heartbreaking reality underscores the devastating impact of unchecked monsoon rains in the north.

Chilas Hospital received the injured, with medical teams racing against time. One person remains in critical condition. Despite the urgency, rescue efforts have faced multiple challenges. The region’s communication lines have been severed due to a fibre optic cable break, cutting off thousands of tourists from their families.

Still, there’s a glimmer of hope. Firaq confirmed that hundreds of stranded visitors have been safely rescued from the treacherous Babusar Highway. Many found refuge in nearby homes, welcomed by local residents who didn’t hesitate to open their doors to strangers in need.

“The Chief Minister has ordered all available resources to be deployed immediately,” Firaq stated. However, with multiple highway sections still closed and farmland submerged, recovery will take time. Floods in Babusar Naran, GB Kill 3 Tourists, 15 Still Missing—and the government is leaving no stone unturned to prevent that number from rising.

Elsewhere in Naran, the Jalkhad road remains blocked. Rescue 1122 Mansehra spokesperson Amir Khadam Khan reported that a car was trapped under stones and debris. Fortunately, no further casualties were reported. Heavy machinery has been dispatched by the National Highways Authority to clear the roads and restore traffic.

Just days before the disaster, the GB Disaster Management Authority had issued a warning. The risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and flash floods was rising. Tourists were urged to avoid riverbanks and water channels—but many, unaware or caught in sudden rain, found themselves in danger’s path.

The destruction didn’t stop in the north. In Swat’s Madyan area, the roof of a house collapsed amid relentless rain, burying a mother and her three children. Tragically, the siblings could not be saved. Their mother is in critical condition, according to Rescue 1122 North.

As Floods in Babusar Naran, GB, Kill 3 Tourists, 15 are Still Missing. The rest of the country is also bracing for nature’s fury. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warns that monsoon rains will persist across Punjab, Sindh, KP, and Balochistan until July 25. Thunderstorms, high winds, and urban flooding are expected to follow.

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a flood alert, noting that rivers like Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Sutlej are showing rising water levels. The Indus River at Taunsa barrage has already recorded a high flow of over 420,000 cusecs.

PDMA’s Director General, Irfan Ali Kathia, has mobilized local administrations. Section 144 has been imposed near riverbanks. All departments—WASA, Rescue 1122, and district teams—are on high alert. Drainage efforts in low-lying areas have been intensified.

Since June 25, Pakistan has witnessed the dark side of the monsoon season. The PDMA reports 123 people dead and 462 injured due to rain-related incidents. Seventy-one of those deaths occurred in just the last two days. As cities drown and villages collapse, the human toll continues to rise.

But even in tragedy, resilience shines through. Locals in GB have stepped up to host stranded tourists. Rescue teams are working around the clock. And for the families of those missing, hope remains.

Because every life matters. Every second counts.
