Antonio Guterres Pakistan visit

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a three-day official visit to Pakistan, where he is scheduled to meet the country’s top leadership and discuss regional and international developments.

Guterres Arrives in Islamabad

Guterres is visiting Pakistan from October 6 to 8, 2026, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. He was received at Islamabad airport by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir.

The visit marks the UN chief’s return to Pakistan since his previous trip in 2022, when he visited areas affected by devastating floods.

Meetings with Pakistan’s Leadership

During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The meetings are expected to cover regional and international issues, Pakistan-UN cooperation and efforts to promote international peace and security.

Visit to UNMOGIP Headquarters

The UN Secretary-General will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Islamabad.

The mission monitors developments along the Line of Control and remains part of the UN’s engagement with the region.

Guterres to Visit NDMA

Another key part of the visit will be a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

According to the UN, Guterres will review Pakistan’s progress in strengthening disaster preparedness, resilience and early-warning systems following the devastating floods of 2022.

Regional and International Issues

The visit will provide an opportunity for Pakistan and the United Nations to exchange views on regional and international developments.

The UN has also said Guterres will discuss Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts involving the United States and Iran.

The Foreign Office said the visit reflects Pakistan’s continued support for multilateralism and the principles of the UN Charter, while also reaffirming cooperation between Islamabad and the United Nations.
