The S-400 air defence system, one of India’s most advanced military assets, was reportedly destroyed by Pakistan during its newly launched military campaign, Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, on Saturday. The Pakistan Army announced the strike targeted an Indian S-400 air defence system deployed in Adampur, marking a significant escalation in cross-border hostilities.

According to security sources, the destruction of the S-400 air defence system was achieved using hypersonic missiles launched from JF-17 Thunder aircraft. The system, valued at approximately $1.5 billion, is known for its cutting-edge technology and formidable defense capabilities.

Manufactured by Russia, the S-400 air defence system is considered one of the most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems globally. It is engineered to intercept various aerial threats, including aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, with a range of up to 600 kilometres.

The system features a triad of powerful radar systems, missile launchers, and a centralized command center, enabling it to simultaneously track and engage multiple targets—even advanced fighter jets and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia in October 2018 to procure five units of the S-400 air defence system, a move that sparked concern within NATO due to the system’s long-range strike capabilities.

The reported destruction of the S-400 air defence system comes amid Pakistan’s broader military response to alleged Indian missile strikes on multiple Pakistani air bases.
