China slams US Pentagon report India discord

China has strongly condemned a recent US Pentagon report, accusing Washington of publishing an “irresponsible” and misleading document that seeks to sow discord between Beijing and New Delhi and distort China’s national defence policy. Officials from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected key assertions within the report, asserting that the claims misrepresent China’s intentions and could harm international relations.

The Pentagon report, officially titled Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2025, was submitted to the US Congress and suggested that China might use reduced border tensions with India to hinder deeper ties between India and the United States. It also flagged expanded China-Pakistan cooperation in defence and space and mentioned speculation about possible military facilities abroad. Chinese officials disputed those characterizations, labelling them unfounded and politically motivated.

At a media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian argued that the report distorts China’s defence policy, exaggerates the so-called “Chinese military threat,” and attempts to justify US strategic dominance. Lin asserted that China sees its relationship with India from a strategic, long-term perspective and emphasised that border issues are bilateral matters that should not be subject to external judgments. Beijing also reaffirmed its willingness to enhance communication and cooperation with India while opposing what it calls groundless and irresponsible commentary from other countries.

China’s defence ministry similarly rejected the report’s claims, accusing the US of interfering in internal affairs and spreading biased narratives. Chinese authorities labelled the annual Pentagon assessment as full of errors and urged Washington to refrain from fabricating false narratives that provoke confrontation and antagonism.
