KARACHI: Police have revealed details of a raid on an alleged private detention facility near the Civil Defence compound in Karachi’s Garden area, where 29 people were reportedly found in illegal confinement.
29 People Found in Illegal Custody
According to police sources, the detainees were being held at a compound near the Civil Defence office. Some individuals were reportedly found handcuffed and confined inside a room, while two others were allegedly being held in a car.
The detainees were reportedly picked up from different locations and brought to the premises on the alleged instructions of an official associated with the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
Police Officials Found at the Site
During the raid, ASI Tahir Khan and Constable Abdul Wahab were reportedly present at the compound. Police sources also said a police mobile and a prisoners’ van were found at the location.
Officials alleged that SIU Head Constable Faisal Abbas and other personnel were involved in operating the facility. The matter remains under investigation.
Detainees Allege Torture
Police sources said some of the recovered individuals alleged that they had been subjected to torture during their detention. A woman was also among those recovered, and officials noted that no female police officer was posted at the premises while she was being held.
The magistrate who conducted the raid reportedly found that the premises were not an officially notified facility of the SIU or Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC).
No Official Detention Records Found
According to the magistrate’s report, police officials were asked to produce documents or records establishing the legal basis for detaining the individuals. The officials reportedly failed to provide such records.
The recovered people were subsequently taken to Nabi Bux police station for legal formalities and were later released on personal bonds.
