KARACHI, September 22, 2026 — The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has intensified its campaign for new administrative units after holding a major rally in Karachi. The party says the proposed restructuring is intended to bring administration and decision-making closer to the people.
MQM-P Launches Campaign Through Karachi Rally
The rally was held from Karimabad toward Mazar-e-Quaid and attracted party workers, supporters, women, youth and students. Senior MQM-P leaders, including Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Dr Farooq Sattar, addressed participants at the conclusion of the gathering.
Party Calls for New Administrative Units
MQM-P leaders have argued that new administrative units should be created on administrative rather than linguistic grounds. They say greater decentralisation could allow local representatives to manage resources and address civic issues more directly.
Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said the campaign would continue beyond Karachi, with the party planning to take its position to other cities across Sindh and the country.
Political Differences Over Administrative Restructuring
The demand has also generated political disagreement in Sindh. MQM-P supports administrative restructuring, while other political actors have opposed proposals that could alter the province’s existing territorial arrangement.
The Sindh Assembly has also adopted a resolution opposing attempts to divide the province, while MQM-P lawmakers have maintained that their demand concerns administrative empowerment rather than an ethnic division.
MQM-P Says Campaign Will Continue
MQM-P leaders have described the Karachi rally as the beginning of a wider political campaign. The party says it plans to hold further public activities and present its case for administrative reforms in other parts of Sindh.
The issue of creating smaller administrative units has consequently become part of an ongoing political debate over governance, devolution and the distribution of administrative powers in Pakistan.
