KARACHI, September 21, 2026 — Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has inaugurated 49 modern digital classrooms and 20 satellite schools for children with disabilities across the province. The initiative also includes a new sign-language teacher training programme aimed at improving inclusive education.
New Digital Classrooms to Support Deaf Students
The 49 digital classrooms have been established at 37 Special Education and Rehabilitation Centres operated by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD).
According to officials, the classrooms are expected to benefit around 754 deaf students. They include modern learning technology such as smartboards and e-learning resources to provide students with greater access to digital education.
20 Satellite Schools to Expand Access
The government has also launched 20 satellite schools across Sindh, aimed at reaching children who have limited access to specialised educational facilities because of distance or location.
The satellite schools are expected to provide educational opportunities to approximately 476 children, particularly those living in underserved areas.
Sign Language Training for Teachers
Alongside the new classrooms and schools, the Sindh government has introduced a Sign Language Teachers’ Training Programme.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with Deaf Reach and the Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF). It is designed to strengthen teachers’ professional skills and promote Pakistan Sign Language as an important part of inclusive education.
Murad Ali Shah said technology and infrastructure alone are not enough and stressed the importance of properly trained teachers in making the new facilities effective.
Sindh Provides Support to 20,000 Special Students
The chief minister said around 20,000 students are currently enrolled in 67 specialised institutions across Sindh.
Students receive several services free of charge, including education, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, speech therapy, transportation and nutritious meals. The government also provides enrolled students with a monthly stipend of Rs3,000.
Growing Demand for Specialised Education
DEPD Secretary Tuaha Ahmed Faruqui said demand for specialised education is increasing. Around 500 students are currently enrolled at two government facilities in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, while nearly 810 children are waiting for admission.
The department says its focus is not only on increasing enrolment but also on helping children develop communication skills, confidence and vocational abilities.
