Alabama emergency authorities have issued a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday for areas north of Interstate 20, as a significant winter weather system approaches the state. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency warns that rain will spread across the region Thursday and Friday, transitioning to freezing rain and potentially ice south of the Tennessee River through the weekend. Total precipitation from this system is expected to be 1–2 inches of liquid equivalent, with ice accumulations up to three-quarters of an inch and some snow near and north of the Tennessee River. These conditions could lead to hazardous travel and widespread power outages lasting several days if temperatures fall below freezing and precipitation persists. Areas south of I-20, including Mobile, Montgomery, and Auburn corridors, may see mostly rain with isolated freezing issues depending on evolving temperature trends. Residents are advised to prepare now for dangerous road conditions and possible disruptions.
