In a dramatic turnaround, US President Donald Trump has dropped his opposition to the Epstein files release, calling on House Republicans to back a bill that forces the Justice Department to disclose its investigative documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The House of Representatives is now set to vote on legislation — the Epstein Files Transparency Act that, if approved, would compel the DOJ to make public all files related to Epstein’s investigations, including communications and case materials.
Trump made the shift after months of resistance, during which he dismissed the calls for disclosure as a “Democrat hoax.” On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide.”
Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, also endorsed the vote, saying he expects it to be “close to unanimous.” but Johnson raised concerns that some records may need redactions, especially to protect the identities of victims.
The key to forcing this vote was a “discharge petition” led by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) gathered the required 218 signatures, allowing the bill to bypass leadership resistance.
Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have welcomed the effort but remain wary. Several survivors urged Trump to fully release the files and avoid manipulating them for political gain ahead of the vote.
If the House approves the bill, it will move to the Senate. But in the upper chamber, the outcome remains uncertain: Senate Majority Leader John Thune has not publicly committed to holding a vote.
