The Sindh government has appointed Prof Dr Wasim Qazi as Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi for a four-year term, bringing permanent leadership back to the university after the post remained vacant since July 2026.
Dr Wasim Qazi Appointed for Four Years
The appointment was made with immediate effect following approval from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. The notification was issued by the Sindh Universities and Boards Department under the relevant provisions of the University of Karachi Act.
Dr Qazi becomes the 23rd Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi and will serve for a four-year term.
Dr Qazi Emerges as Top Candidate
Dr Wasim Qazi was among three candidates shortlisted for the position. The search committee awarded him 86 marks, while Dr Moazzam Ali Khan received 74 marks and Dr Shafiqur Rehman secured 71 marks. The shortlisted candidates were subsequently interviewed by the Sindh chief minister before the final appointment.
Who Is Dr Wasim Qazi?
Dr Qazi is a senior higher-education administrator with more than three decades of academic and leadership experience. Before joining Karachi University, he served as the founding Vice Chancellor of Karachi Metropolitan University.
He has also served as President and Vice Chancellor of Iqra University, as well as Vice Chancellor of Saifee Burhani University. His professional career includes academic and administrative roles at institutions such as Hamdard University and the University of Lahore.
Academic Background
Dr Qazi studied at the University of Karachi, earning a master’s degree in Philosophy from its Philosophy Department. He later completed his PhD at Hamdard University and has also undertaken international academic and postdoctoral engagements.

Permanent Leadership Returns to Karachi University
The permanent VC position at Karachi University had been vacant since July 28, 2026, following the completion of Dr Khalid Iraqi’s term. During the interim period, NED University Vice Chancellor Dr Tufail Ahmed Jokhio was given additional charge of Karachi University.
Dr Qazi’s appointment now formally restores a permanent vice chancellor to the university for the next four years.
