The federal government has announced plans to distribute 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks to talented students across Pakistan under the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebook Scheme. The initiative aims to expand access to digital education and help students develop the technology skills needed for modern learning.
The programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme. The Tokyo Technology Care Foundation has agreed to supply the devices under a memorandum of understanding with the government.
Who Is Eligible for the Chromebook Scheme?
According to the announced eligibility criteria, students must have obtained at least 50% marks in their latest Grade 9 or Secondary School Certificate Part-I examinations to be considered.
The scheme is intended to cover eligible students from public schools, private schools supported by provincial education foundations and registered religious seminaries. Selection will be based on verified academic results and merit within the relevant province or region, examination board and academic stream.
The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) will help verify examination results, while relevant authorities will check students’ enrolment and institutional affiliation.
Province-Wise Distribution of Chromebooks
The reported allocation of the 500,000 devices is as follows:
| Province or region | Chromebooks allocated |
|---|---|
| Punjab | 181,090 |
| Sindh | 85,925 |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | 51,170 |
| Balochistan | 31,815 |
| Islamabad | 100,000 |
| Azad Jammu and Kashmir | 25,000 |
| Gilgit-Baltistan | 25,000 |
| Total | 500,000 |
These allocations are intended to distribute the devices across Pakistan’s provinces and regions. Officials have also outlined separate shares for school students and students enrolled in registered madaris.
Students to Receive Internet Connectivity Devices
The scheme is designed to provide more than a computer alone. The government has said the package includes a Chromebook, a school bag and a MiFi device to support internet connectivity.
These resources are intended to help students access online educational material, digital libraries and remote learning opportunities. The government expects the internet connectivity component to extend benefits to students’ families as well.
How Will Students Be Selected?
Authorities plan to verify examination results, school enrolment and institutional records before finalising the merit lists. According to the published criteria, devices will be assigned to selected recipients and delivered through a monitored distribution process.
Students and parents should wait for official guidance from the relevant education authorities regarding application procedures, merit lists and delivery dates. The announcement does not mean every Grade 9 student will automatically receive a Chromebook; eligibility and selection will depend on the scheme’s criteria and regional allocations.
