BAHAWALPUR: The lady, who was tortured by police officer Mir Hasan on a moving train, was discovered dead at Chani Goth Railway Station in Bahawalpur, authorities said Monday.
The incident was brought to light after a video of the police officer went popular on social media, in which he was shown grabbing the lady by her hair and striking her repeatedly while other passengers watched calmly.
According to Abdullah Sheikh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Railways, the incident occurred on April 7 aboard the Karachi-Lala Musa Millat Express.
The woman, Maryam Bibi, was from Jaranwala, Faisalabad.
The victim’s brother, Afzal, stated that his sister used to work at a beauty salon in Karachi and was traveling to Jaranwala to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to Afzal, Maryam departed Karachi on April 7 by Millat Express. He stated that the Bahawalpur police told his family of Maryam’s death, claiming she fell off the train.
“We buried her on April 9 in the village, believing it was a rail accident. When the video went viral, the truth about the event and the brutality against my sister came to light,” he explained.
Afzal said that the policeman tortured and killed his sister before throwing her body on a railway track, and that they asked the police to file a report, but no action was done.
Meanwhile, the woman’s nephew, who was traveling with her, said that his aunt was reciting aloud, to which the police officer protested and began abusing her.
“The policeman took our aunt with him and dropped us at the next station,” recalled the nephew’s uncle.
Meanwhile, police claimed Maryam Bibi’s postmortem was performed at Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Ahmedpur, and they are awaiting the results.
