Surgeons at Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital claim to have made a significant breakthrough by performing robotic surgery to cure diabetes and obesity.

Professor Shahid Rasool, who led the operation, told Geo News that diabetic patients will no longer need blood sugar-controlling medication or insulin following this treatment.

The effective robotic surgery for obesity and metabolic disorders entailed lowering the size of both the stomach and the large intestine to speed up digestion.

The hour-long procedure was carried out on a 45-year-old obese lady weighing 140kg and suffering from diabetes.

Professor Rasool indicated that the procedure will help the woman shed weight and reverse her diabetes.

Following the procedure, patients would no longer need diabetic medication, and the surgery was effective in around 70% of identical instances.

Since September 2023, Jinnah Hospital has done 135 robotic procedures, ranging from general surgery to urology and gynecology.

Since September 2023, the medical center has performed 135 robotic procedures, including urology, gynaecology, and general surgery.

Given the intricacy of gynaecological robotic procedures, specialised training sessions were organized, as well as hospital-organised workshops.

A session on gynecological robotic procedures was also held at the institution. In Pakistan’s surrounding nations, no robotic procedures for metabolic disorders have been undertaken.

This is the first time in Pakistan history that robotic surgery for obesity and metabolic disorders have been performed.

Laparoscopic surgery rotates at a 180-degree angle, whereas robotic surgery allows the arms to rotate 360 degrees. It provides three-dimensional vision, lowering operation complexity while minimizing blood loss and incision size.
