SHO Suspended for Demanding Bribe from Gutka Mafia in Karachi

SHO Suspended for Allegedly Demanding Bribe from Gutka Mafia in Karachi: Arshad Awan, the Station House Officer of Shah Latif police station, faced suspension following allegations of soliciting a bribe from the Gutka Mafia, according to news reports. The case highlights Karachi’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and uphold law and order.

The suspension followed swift action by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Alam Odho after an audio clip surfaced, allegedly capturing Awan demanding Rs. 400,000 for the release of suspects arrested during a raid on a gutka factory.

The Shah Latif police arrested four suspects: Imran, Zeeshan, Osama, and Faisal. However, mafia members reportedly contacted the SHO, seeking the release of their associates. The audio clip, dated January 22, 2025, allegedly features the SHO admitting to accepting Rs. 200,000 in bribes during his first week on duty and demanding an additional Rs. 400,000. He reportedly warned the mafia about the assistant commissioner’s authority to take strict action.

SSP Malir Kashif Aftab Abbasi initially issued a show-cause notice to Arshad Awan. Following the revelation, AIG Odho suspended him to ensure transparency and accountability during the investigation. Authorities continue their probe into the matter to uphold justice.
