During Ramazan, poultry prices in Islamabad and Rawalpindi reached Rs 445 per kilogram for chicken and Rs 290 per dozen for eggs.
Poultry chicken meat has reached open market rates of Rs 650 to 660 per kg, while poultry birds and eggs have been selling for Rs 445 per kg and Rs 290 per dozen or more in recent months. Consumers are increasingly finding it difficult to afford the exorbitant prices.
Poultry prices in the twin cities have risen by 30% in the last month since Ramadan began, causing significant market instability. According to a market survey, the price of poultry chicken has increased by 28% in the twin cities over the previous two months, while the price of poultry eggs has increased by 30% over the same time period.
Dr. Sajjad Arshad, former Chairman of the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), stated that the recent spike in poultry prices is due to demand and supply considerations during Ramadan. He stated that there had been a rise in poultry company inputs and operating costs across the country, resulting in a market crisis.
Dr. Arshad went on to say that the country’s economic situation is also essential. “Poultry feed components imported from other nations are pricey. Soybean is a valuable feed product. However, because many soybean-carrying ships have been detained at the Karachi port, this has an unavoidable influence on chicken prices.”
“The increase in poultry prices was inevitable, which is why we have seen an increase in the prices in the twin cities,” he added.
