To confront Karachi’s growing street crime situation, the Sindh government has taken urgent action, deploying the Shaheen Force, a specialist squad, to restore peace and order in the city. This big development was disclosed at a high-level Apex Committee meeting on Thursday.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah informed President Asif Zardari on the Madadgar 15 service upgrades, which included the police force receiving an additional 168 cars and 120 motorbikes to improve efficiency and coverage.
The Director-General of Rangers Sindh provided the President with a complete four-month report detailing the arrest of 49 persons involved in street crime, with 43 suspects caught and 13 neutralized in various operations.
Over the last four months, the Inspector-General of Police Sindh has killed 63 dacoits and arrested 418 others, with attempts on to find and apprehend 20 more.
These activities have resulted in the rescue of 609 abducted citizens, of which 103 have already been rescued. However, the efforts have not been without sacrifice, with 17 police officers killed and 27 injured in the line of duty.
President Asif Zardari presided over the meeting, which took place at the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi. Key officials in attendance were Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, and DG Rangers Sindh Major General Azhar Waqas.
President Zardari instructed that the Karachi Safe City Project be completed as soon as possible and that sophisticated barriers be installed to secure the city’s internal and exterior arteries. He highlighted a zero-tolerance approach for land snatching and ordered the security of Chinese nationals living in Karachi.
