NEPRA Approves Rs3.03/Unit Increase for Karachi Electricity Users

NEPRA

Nepra announced on Friday an Rs3.03 per unit raise for K-Electric customers as part of the July 2024 fuel costs adjustment (FCA). According to the announcement, the increased pricing will be applied to power bills beginning in December 2024.

The revised power pricing will apply to all user categories, except for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), lifeline customers, and those on prepayment meters.

Previously, the city’s sole power supplier, KE, had requested a rate increase of Rs3.9 per unit as part of the July fuel cost adjustment.

A day after Nepra announced a Re0.8555 per unit refund to power users on their October bills, it authorized this increase for those who paid higher electricity rates in August 2024 under its monthly fuel cost modification mechanism

According to a statement released on Thursday, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a 57-paisa per unit rate cut for the same time.

The electrical control stated that the decision would apply to all consumer groups except lifeline clients, domestic users using up to 300 units, agriculture clients and EVCS, consumers of all power distribution companies (Discos) except K-Electric customers, and pre-paid electricity consumers of all categories.

Nepra held a public hearing on the issue on September 26 and issued an official notification on October 24.

The CPPA requested Nepra to lower the price by Re0.5755 per unit because of fuel cost adjustments (FCA). However, the regulator has approved an additional charge of Re0.8555 per unit for consumers.
