Karachi wholesalers stated on Thursday that they will shut down the market in protest of the commissioner’s pricing list.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the wholesalers’ body in Karachi. The traders of Jodia Bazar, the city’s largest wholesale market, rejected the tariff list provided by the Karachi commissioner and declared the bazaar’s closure.
In his statement, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association Abdul Rauf Ibrahim advised the commissioner to assure delivery of the products if he wanted the commodities to be sold at the rates listed.
He questioned how the sugar could be sold in the wholesale market for Rs123 per kg while the ex-mill pricing was Rs134 per kg.
We cannot take the loss of millions of dollars on a daily basis, Rauf remarked as he announced the wholesale market’s closure beginning today. The move may result in a shortage of vital items in the city before the start of the Holy Month of Ramzan.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts that Pakistanis will commemorate the first day of the Holy Month on Wednesday, March 13.
