Karachi Muggers Kill Father Funding Daughter’s Medical Care

Karachi

Karachi: Farhan, a man returning home after selling his wife’s jewelry to pay for his daughter’s medical treatment, was killed by muggers earlier this week, according to his family.

Farhan worked at a pharmaceutical company and was facing financial struggles because of his daughter’s illness.

Farhan’s father-in-law said robbers shot him three times during the attack. The police have not made any arrests or filed a case yet. Although the incident occurred on Tuesday, the police did not contact the family. Instead, they told the family to visit the police station to file a report while they were still at the hospital.

This incident happened just days after Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho claimed that street crime in the city had decreased by 50% in the first quarter of 2024. However, the number of deaths from street crime has now reached 100.

Despite efforts to control crime, the number of people dying from street violence continues to increase.

In a separate incident, a gunman killed a man named Umair in a targeted shooting near the Mubarak Mosque in Karachi’s Defence area. Police believe the shooting was due to personal conflict. Umair was sitting in his car, talking on the phone for 15 to 20 minutes, when two men on a motorcycle shot at him, hitting his car with seven bullets.

Street crime is common in Karachi. The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reported over 50,000 incidents between January and August this year.

These numbers only include reported cases, so many more may have gone unreported. On average, authorities recorded 208 crimes each day, with mobile phone snatching and vehicle theft being the most common.

In addition to losing their belongings, street criminals have killed around 100 people and injured about 500 in shootings related to these crimes.
