Electricity Prices to Drop by Rs8/unit

Electricity

Electricity rates are expected to be slashed by up to Rs8 per unit for three months under the planned winter package.

According to insiders, the winter strategy is intended to provide respite to customers by promoting increasing power use.

The Power Division, the Ministry of Finance, and other agencies are collaborating on the specifics of the winter package.

The winter energy package will reduce power bills to Rs8 per unit over three months. However, the ultimate ratification of the plan is reliant on IMF approval.

Three distinct options for price reductions are being considered during the winter months.

One idea calls for assistance for all power customers, while another advises restricting relief to industrial consumers to increase demand. If only industrial users receive relief, prices will fall by up to 20 rupees per unit.

The initial proposal outlines a three-month winter package from December to February 2025. A second suggestion contemplates extending the period from December to April.

According to sources, the winter package will mostly benefit industrial users. Officials from the Ministry of Finance have already negotiated with the IMF about the package. A formal report was also filed in response to the IMF’s queries.

The ultimate decision on the package, which includes lowering manufacturing costs while raising power consumption, is likely soon.
If approved by the IMF, the plan will be presented to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for final consent.
The federal cabinet will give its final authorization after NEPRA grants approval for the winter package.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) raised Karachi’s electricity tariffs by Rs0.40 per unit.
