Customs on Thursday foiled a bid to smuggle gold worth Rs170 million at Karachi airport.
According to a Pakistan Customs representative, a family traveling to South Africa via Dubai was discovered smuggling gold during the luggage testing procedure.
The gold weighing nine kilograms, worth Rs170 million was released in the baggage of the six-member family, including five women. Following the discovery of the gold, the passengers were brought into prison.
On April 5, a man was captured at Multan Airport for trying to sneak around 16kg of gold out of the country. According to news reports, the Federal Investigation Agency Immigration encountered 16 kilograms of rare yellow metal from a man identified as Muhammad Tanveer who was traveling to Dubai.
By the police, Muhammad Tanveer’s luggage was searched owing to his frequent trips, and the yellow metal was discovered during the inspection.
Last April, Customs officers stopped a foreign money smuggling attempt at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. They claimed 65,000 US dollars, or over Rs12 million, were found in the luggage of a female traveler headed to Doha.
