Today (Thursday), elections will be conducted for six empty Senate seats. According to the Pakistan Election Commission, polling will take place at the National Assembly in Islamabad, as well as the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies.

Polling will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 4:00 p.m. in Parliament House, as well as at the buildings of the Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies.

The ECP has completed plans to hold by-elections to fill six Senate seats left vacant by Senators who were elected to the National and Provincial Assembly in the February 8 elections.

The ECP has already sent ballot papers and other polling materials to the provincial assembly of Sindh and Balochistan. Polling will be place for one reserved seat in Islamabad, two general seats in Sindh, and three general seats to represent Balochistan.

Among those who relinquished their seats were Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who joined the National Assembly following their victory in the 2017 general elections. Similarly, Nisar Ahmed Khoro and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar were elected to the Sindh Assembly, while Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti joined the Balochistan Assembly.

Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan People’s Party and Chaudhry Ilyas Meharban of the Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are fighting in the elections for the federal capital seat.
