KARACHI: The Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation-Customs, FBR, has apprehended the accused mastermind behind the illicit importation of significant amounts of betel nuts into Pakistan.
According to a FIR, reliable evidence was obtained that this Karachi-based firm run by the accused mastermind was involved in importing betel nuts, a prohibited item, using falsified laboratory papers to avoid import limits.
An examination indicated that between October 2023 and January 2024, the business imported various consignments of betel nuts totaling over 100 metric tons. To clear these shipments, the business produced a falsified lab report claiming a reduced level of hazardous aflatoxin material, which is prohibited under import standards.
The owner of the aforementioned firm, or the mastermind, has been arrested in this case. During preliminary interrogation, he acknowledged to having in communication with Tahir Chaudary, an Indonesian supplier who imports betel nuts, broomsticks, and spices. He also exported rice.
Authorities suspected the accused was working in collaboration with the clearance agency, Department of Plant Protection workers in Karachi, and other accomplices. The misdeclared imports breached many provisions of the Customs Act, Import Policy Order, and Import and Export Control Act.
An FIR has been filed in the matter, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to uncover all partners participating in this smuggling enterprise, which endangers public health.
