Manchester City Women Draw 1-1 With Real Madrid

Bunny Shaw celebrates for Manchester City Women against Real Madrid.

Bunny Shaw scored Manchester City's equaliser in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Real Madrid.

Manchester City Women drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday after Bunny Shaw cancelled out Linda Caicedo’s first-half goal. Real Madrid thought they had scored a late winner through Sílvia Cristóbal, but referee Silvia Gasperotti had already stopped play following an incident involving Manchester City’s Beth Mead.

The result at the Joie Stadium gave both sides their second consecutive draw in the league phase, leaving them with two points from their opening two matches.

Manchester City threatened early when Mary Fowler headed against the crossbar in the ninth minute from Alex Greenwood’s delivery. The hosts came close to taking the lead but could not turn the opportunity into a goal.

Real Madrid grew into the contest and took the lead in the 29th minute. Linda Caicedo finished a quick counterattack with a low, right-footed shot across goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.

The goal put Madrid in control of the scoreline and forced City to chase the game. The hosts went into half-time trailing 1-0 despite their early chance.

City responded after the break and found their equaliser six minutes into the second half.

Yui Hasegawa created the opening for Shaw, who struck from inside the penalty area in the 51st minute. Her right-footed finish beat Madrid goalkeeper Merle Frohms and brought the hosts back into the match.

The goal continued Shaw’s importance to City’s European campaign. UEFA reported before the match that she had scored seven goals in 10 Women’s Champions League appearances; her equaliser took her tally to eight goals in 11 appearances. UEFA’s matchday report confirmed the updated figure.

Both teams looked for a winner as the match entered its closing stages. City created opportunities of their own, while Madrid continued to threaten at the other end.

The match’s decisive talking point came in the closing minutes. Sílvia Cristóbal struck from the edge of the penalty area and sent the ball into the top corner, appearing to give Real Madrid a 2-1 lead.

However, the goal did not stand. Gasperotti had blown her whistle after an incident involving Mead before Cristóbal’s shot reached the net. The referee’s decision meant the effort could not change the score.

Manchester City’s official match report said the referee stopped play after an obstruction involving Mead as Cristóbal prepared her strike. Real Madrid’s report also confirmed that the goal was disallowed after the referee had stopped play.

The decision preserved City’s point, while Madrid missed the chance to claim their first league-phase victory. The available match reports establish why the goal was ruled out, but they do not provide an independent refereeing assessment of the decision.

The draw followed another comeback for Manchester City in their opening fixture. City recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to Bayern Munich, while Real Madrid opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

Both sides therefore have two points after two league-phase matches. They will need wins in the remaining fixtures to strengthen their positions as the competition progresses.

Manchester City are scheduled to host Paris Saint-Germain on 29 October, while Real Madrid are due to visit Bayern Munich on 28 October, according to UEFA’s published fixture list.

For City, Shaw’s equaliser prevented a home defeat. For Madrid, the late disallowed goal will remain the defining moment of a match in which Caicedo had put them ahead and Cristóbal appeared to have secured a winner.
