Sindhi region experiences excessive rain owing to a system of intense monsoon winds
A meteorological official stated that the monsoon rain system is expected to bring 300 to 400mm of rainfall to the districts of Thatta and Badin. Meanwhile, according to a weather official, Karachi is likely to receive 150 to 200mm of rain.
Rainfall will become more intense as the weather system nears the region. Karachi and other districts of Sindh are expected to receive heavy rainfall from August 28 to 30 with breaks.
“The downpour will begin in the afternoon and continue until August 30,” he said while apprehending urban flooding in the metropolis.
On Monday, the Sindh Chief Minister received a briefing about the heavy rainfall expected from the weather system entering the province during a rain emergency session held in Karachi. The session that the weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Karachi from August 27 to 31, as the Chief Meteorologist said.
He also mentioned that another monsoon rain system is expected in the first week of September.
“The upcoming monsoon rain spell is expected to bring around 150 to 200 millimeters of rainfall to Karachi,” said the meteorologist. “In Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, and Nawab Shah, rainfall is anticipated to be around 250 to 300 millimeters.”
The weather system could bring up to 500mm of rainfall to Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, and Umarkot districts. Additionally, other districts in Sindh may receive between 70 to 100mm of rainfall, according to a weather official’s briefing.
Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Salman Shah, forecasted extremely heavy rainfall on August 28. “This could lead to flooding in Dadu, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, and Jamshoro,” he warned.
Chief Minister Shah has directed all divisional commissioners to implement necessary arrangements to address the situation for monsoon rain.
He urged Sindh’s local governments to stay vigilant, oversee the condition of local nullahs and drains, and prepare machinery for effective water drainage.
“All towns have been equipped with machinery for the cleaning of drains and nullahs,” stated Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani.
Karachi’s Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the water board has upgraded the drainage system for nullahs.
