Three people lost their lives in Karachi on Wednesday as speeding heavy vehicles caused multiple fatal accidents fueling public outrage over a deteriorating traffic system and lack of enforcement.
The first incident occurred near Surjani 4K Chowrangi when a speeding water tanker struck a motorcyclist identified as first-year student Abid Raees, killing him on the spot. Abid was described as the sole son and the primary support of his parents; his father, visibly distraught at the scene, lamented that his home was now destroyed.
In a second crash at the Shershah bridge, a speeding dumper rammed into a motorcycle, killing 29-year-old Nasreen and injuring her husband. The dumper driver fled the scene. The third tragedy took place in Faqeer Colony, Orangi Town, where another water tanker struck a motorcycle, killing four-year-old Sufyan instantly and injuring his cousin.
Authorities have seized one of the tankers and launched a search for the offending driver. According to official figures, this year alone within the first 344 days a total of 807 people have been killed and 11,597 injured in road accidents across Karachi. The rising death toll has intensified public concern and renewed demands for urgent reforms to address the city’s crumbling traffic management and enforcement.
