Scheme 33 Sewerage System Collapses, Residents Face Sewage Flooding in Karachi

Scheme 33 sewerage collapse

In Karachi’s Scheme 33, residents of several housing societies say the sewerage system has collapsed again, leaving the main road between the M9 Motorway and the G-3 bus stop swamped under sewage-filled water.

Stagnant and foul-smelling water has allegedly flooded large portions of Sector 17-A, Gwalior Society, Peeli Bhit Co-op Housing Society, PCSIR Society and Quetta Town. The newly installed sewer line reportedly sank, and an illegally-built boundary wall in a neighbouring society is said to have forced sewage to accumulate further.

Traffic flow is severely disrupted—only one lane of the main road is passable, and delays of up to two hours are being reported during peak times — while potholes created by the stagnant water are causing accidents involving motorcyclists and rickshaws.

Children are among the worst affected: many pupils now wade through the filthy water on their way to school, their uniforms soiled, and parents face long waiting times due to traffic congestion. Residents say their repeated complaints to the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and municipal authorities have been ignored.

Unless the sewerage flow is restored and the roads repaired, residents warn the risk of disease outbreaks will rise, the stench will become unbearable and infrastructure will further deteriorate.
