The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has launched an aggressive fire safety enforcement drive across Karachi in the wake of the deadly Gul Plaza fire, issuing ultimatums to commercial centres to install functional fire-fighting systems within three days or face closure. Authorities say the crackdown is aimed at preventing future tragedies and ensuring compliance with mandatory safety standards.
SBCA Additional Director General Farhan Qaiser confirmed that notices have been sent to large and small commercial buildings throughout the city, requiring them to certify the presence of fire safety systems and firefighting equipment. Centres that fail to comply within the stipulated timeframe risk being sealed by district enforcement teams.
The directive also calls for the submission of verified reports on existing safety measures. Buildings without adequate systems have been instructed to immediately install necessary equipment, while municipal authorities have been tasked with accelerating fire safety audits. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said audit teams have already inspected multiple buildings and urged owners to prioritise safety arrangements.
The move follows the Gul Plaza fire disaster, which killed dozens and exposed significant gaps in fire safety compliance and emergency preparedness in commercial properties. Officials and safety advocates have stressed that strict enforcement is essential to protect public lives and prevent similar incidents in other high-footfall buildings.
