Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of attempting to recreate the unrest of May 9, 2023 in Karachi during the recent visit of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, local officials reported. Memon made the remarks at a press conference in Karachi on Tuesday, alleging that PTI supporters engaged in provocative actions that endangered public order and safety.
Memon claimed that while the Sindh government extended full security and cooperation to the visiting KP delegation, PTI activists violated agreed routes, ignored security advisories, and allegedly instigated unrest. He described incidents including stone-pelting at police officers, vandalism of media vehicles and the assault of journalists, including women reporters, which he said reflected an effort to emulate the chaos witnessed on May 9, 2023 a day marked by violent protests and attacks against state installations by PTI supporters following the arrest of Imran Khan and related political tensions.
Memon emphasised that despite these provocations, the Sindh government exercised restraint and did not register cases against PTI leadership, and asserted that law and order would be maintained moving forward. He also rejected claims of mistreatment, stating authorities advised the visiting delegation on security concerns and approved protocols that were allegedly ignored.
The minister reiterated that any disruptive actions, including planned strikes or rallies, will not be permitted if they threaten peace and stability in Sindh.
